Pune: Higher and Technical Education Department has directed all colleges and educational institutions not to force scholarship beneficiaries from economically backward class (EBC) to pay their academic fees at the time of the admission.

The directives have come at a time when there were incidents wherein the colleges had compelled the students to pay the entire fees at the time of admission. While many students complained they did not receive scholarship amount from the State government as promised, they were forced to clear the fees themselves.

However, time and again, the Higher and Technical Education Department of Maharashtra has issued notices saying that neither those students who benefit 100 pc scholarship nor those who benefit 50 pc scholarship from the State government be forced to pay their fees at the time of the admission. Strict actions would be taken against the colleges that failed to follow the instructions,” said the directives.

Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has also circulated a letter from Deputy Director of Higher Education, Vijay Narkhede to all affiliated colleges directing colleges and institutions should not demand fees from students of EBC during the time of admission. Similarly, beneficiary students have been asked to transfer the scholarship amount through direct benefit transfer.
Even Agriculture, Dairy Development, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department of State government has issued a similar GR. Students receive Rajshri Chhatrapati Maharaj Scholarship and Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Hostel Subsistence allowance from the State government.
