PIMPRI: Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis has called a meeting of BJP functionaries in the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Tuesday. The meeting is being held to discuss the functioning of the civic body and streamlining development work.

The chief minister has been meeting office-bearers of BJP ruled local bodies in the State. He has personally started taking interest in area specific problems owing to growing factionalism in the party at local levels, which is adversely affecting performance of local bodies.

Last week, Fadnavis had called a meeting of office-bearers of the Solapur Municipal Corporation. During the meeting, besides taking a review of the civic body's functioning, he also warned office-bearers against indulging in internal rivalry.

The BJP dislodged NCP after its 15-year rule in PCMC, but its victory was largely because of leaders who joined the party after leaving the NCP. It seems that these leaders have not become familiar with the discipline in the party so far. Therefore, rivalry between different groups has surfaced many times, giving opposition parties a chance to level serious allegations of corruption against PCMC's office-bearers. But these allegations are not being properly responded to by the BJP. Owing to this, there is growing concern among BJP loyalists that the image of the party is being adversely affected.

Allegation of corruption in purchase of Vitthal Rukmini idols helped BJP to come to power but the party failed to prove the allegation and the NCP got a clean chit on the issue. This is considered a big set back to the BJP in the civic body.
