Cloudy skies bring cheer to Puneites

PUNE: Thursday brought respite from sunny days for Puneites as the sky remained cloudy throughout the day. The city also experienced light rain in Talegaon, Katraj and some areas of Shivajinagar in the morning.

Pune recorded a maximum temperature of 31.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday and a minimum temperature of 21.4 degrees Celsius. 

AK Srivastava, head of climate monitoring and analysis at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune said that a circulation has been observed across central Maharashtra, Marathwada and adjoining areas in the last three days.

“Also, a trough has formed from north to south, which crosses through Maharashtra, for the past two to three days. This trough is favourable for formation of clouds over central Maharashtra, including Pune,” said Srivastava.

He further added that the moisture content in the clouds is not very high and hence predictions for only of very light rainfall were made. “This trough is expected to move by March 16 evening, after which the city will experience clear skies,” said Srivastava. He also said there would be a rise in the temperature.

On Thursday, the highest maximum temperature in the country was 40.5 degrees Celsius at Titlagarh in Odisha. The lowest minimum temperature was 13 degrees Celsius at Bharatpur in west Uttar Pradesh.

IMD predicted that till March 16, thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds and hailstorms are very likely at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. IMD has also forecast thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds very likely at isolated places over West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, interior Tamil Nadu and interior Karnataka.

THUNDERSHOWERS LIKELY
- The IMD has predicted that on March 17, Konkan-Goa, central Maharashtra and Vidarbha may experience thundershowers and strong winds along with rainfall.
- From March 16 to March 21, the maximum temperature in the city is expected to be around 35 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature will be around 15 to 17 degrees Celsius. Weather will remain dry from March 18 onwards.
