“As there is more moisture in the air and the climate is suddenly hot and then cold, many people tend to get viral infections. Due to increasing pollution, contaminated water and mosquitoes, many diseases are easily spread on a large scale. During such times, prevention is better than cure,” said Salgar.

PUNE: With relatively higher temperature during the day and cooler nights, city doctors are reporting a rise in viral infections across the city. More and more patients in the city are flooding the clinics with complaints of cough, cold, fever, headache and viral infections.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Dr Somnath Salgar from Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) said that during weather change, there are a lot of people who are falling sick. “As there is more moisture in the air and the climate is suddenly hot and then cold, many people tend to get viral infections. Due to increasing pollution, contaminated water and mosquitoes, many diseases are easily spread on a large scale. During such times, prevention is better than cure,” said Salgar.

He added that sufficient sleep and keeping oneself hydrated is the key. “Drinking safe and clean water is also important. Keep the nails short for living healthy as long nails may carry a lot of infections. Do not sneeze in the open,” said Dr Salgar.

Echoing similar sentiments, Dr Ankur Deshpande, an Ayurvedic practitioner from the city said that in Ayurveda, the transition period from one season to another season is important. “People with low immunity suffer from illness in this transition period. The cough, cold, viral infections are rising because of low immunity and altered lifestyle. Children and elderly people attract infections easily,” said Deshpande.

He also emphasised that home remedies and a few healthy habits can keep everyone away from these infections. “Chew some leaves of basils with a little piece of ginger for immunity and healthy respiratory system. Do not move on antibiotics for a simple cough and cold. Ask a doctor for precise cough syrup. Check if you need expectorant or cough suppressant etc. Prefer to have hot food and warm water,” said Deshpande.

He added that in case of fever, prefer fasting. “If you are on higher antibiotics, then choose to have a light diet. Cover your face with scarf or mask in public place. If you are suffering from a cough, never split it on the road. Do not drink milk before sleeping or add a pinch of turmeric or dry ginger if you are consuming milk for better effects. Chewing of rock sugar crystals gives relief from cough,” said Dr Deshpande.
