City’s water quota fixed at 8.19 TMC by MWRRA

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) now has to use water carefully as according to the order issued by Maharashtra Water Resource Regulatory Authority (MWRRA), PMC can consume only 8.19 Thousand Million Cubic feet (TMC) water every year. If they want to use water above the mentioned limit, they have to take permission from the State government.

On Friday, MWRRA has given final order on the petition filed by Baramati-based farmer Vittal Jarad.

While speaking to Sakal Times, VG Kulkarni, Chief of Water Supply Department of PMC who was present at the hearing, said, “MWRRA has continued the order of Maharashtra Water Resource Department to give 8.19 TMC water to Pune city based on 2011 Census and 155.25 litres per capita per person (LPCP) national standard. They have also mentioned in the order that if PMC wants more water, they can approach the State government and increase their quota by paying extra amount.”

He further said, “Now, PMC is taking more than 8.19 TMC water due to increased city population. After this order, we have to request the State government to continue existing water quota which is more than 11.5 TMC per year and give additional water as population increased due to merged villages.”

On the other hand, petitioner Jarad said, “I had filed a petition in MWRRA for getting adequate water to farmers and urban part of area and Pune city. My intention is not to reduce the water supply of Pune city.”
