Citizens launch missed call campaign for metro extension to Nigdi in first phase

Pune:  Citizen groups in Pimpri Chinchwad have launched a missed call campaign for extension of the Metro route to Nigdi in the first phase. Pimpri Chinchwad Citizens Forum (PCCF) is spearheading the campaign after officials said the work for the extension will not start before completion of first phase and making Metro rail operational between Swargate and Pimpri.

PCCF has appealed to citizens to give missed calls on 08030636448 number if they want  extension of the project should be done in the first phase of the work itself. PCCF, in a statement, said, “The intention of this missed call campaign is to make authorities realise that a large number of citizens want extension of metro project, as the project in its current form is not benefiting more than half the city. If it takes place in the first phase, it will be an advantage for the city as well as metro project.”

Guardian Minister Girish Bapat recently said extension of Pune Metro to Nigdi is possible only after making the stretch till Pimpri operational. Later on extension till Nigdi will be taken on a war footing. But this was disappointing for many.

The Metro authorities have undertaken work of preparing Detailed Project Report (DPR) for extension of Metro project till Nigdi. It will be complete by the time the ongoing work of metro project will be over. So extension will take place after making Metro operational till Pimpri operational.

Currently work of the Metro route connecting Nigdi to Swargate is going on. The 7.2-km stretch of first phase metro route falls in the jurisdiction of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Additional 5 kms extension is required for connecting the metro to Nigdi. The metro project is being executed as per the 2009 DPR. In that DPR It was planned up to Pimpri only. The State government in 2013 gave in-principle approval for this extension.

Responding to citizens’ demand, the PCMC asked Mahametro to prepare DPR for the extension. The PCMC is willing to bear the cost of the extension, between Rs 130 crore to Rs 140 crore per km.
