Pune: In order to get public support for their protest against the State government for shutting down more than 1,300 government schools, Chhatra Bharati has begun a signature campaign in Pune on Tuesday. The campaign will continue at several places across Maharashtra.

“We strongly condemn the government’s decision to shut down so many government-run schools in the State. Moreover, their argument that these children who would be displaced could be sent to other nearby schools is unreasonable. There are already so many remote areas and tribal belts in the State where young girls are deprived of school education by their parents because the schools are too far. Shutting down more than 1,000 schools will affect the lives of so many kids, especially girls and this will raise the drop-out rate,” Sandeep Akhade of Chhatra Bharati said.

On Tuesday, the campaign was conducted near Sir Parshurambhau College. “Our student volunteers, at various crossroads in the area, approached people and explained the issue to them and most of the people supported our cause. We have received more than 750 signatures today (Tuesday), just in one part of the city. The campaign will now continue across the State,” Akhade added. He said the government is trying to promote commercialisation of education by closing government-run schools.

“How can the government ensure that every child gets educated when they are depriving them of affordable education?” Akhade asked.
