Chavan slams State government, Centre for economic slowdown

Mumbai: Former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan slammed the State and Central government over the economic slowdown. He accused the government of not taking proper steps to revive the economy and not revealing authentic data regarding economic growth.

While criticising the government, Chavan said that the growth rate of the economy is lowest in the last 45 years, as per the NSSO report. “The growth rate of the manufacturing sector is 0.6 per cent and infrastructure sector is 2.8 per cent. Overall, the growth rate is only 7.6,” he said.

“Employment rate is zero and unemployment is increasing rapidly. If the government does not take proper steps, more than 10 lakh people may lose their jobs,” Chavan added.

“If the economy does not grow, the income wont increase. This will increase the fiscal deficit. The government had withdrawn money from RBI and this money should be used for recapitalisation of banks,” he suggested.

“In last five years, bank scams has increased by 74 per cent and amount of the fraud is Rs 71,543 crore. The government has to reveal the data of the scam, of which the FIR and legal suit has been filed. It will help to fix the responsibility,” he said.

Chavan also attacked CM Devendra Fadnavis over foreign direct investments and creating job opportunities under Magnetic Maharashtra and Make in Maharashtra programmes. The government has failed to invite the foreign investment and creating jobs for the youths.

Chavan said, “Fadnavis announced that Rs 80 lakh core investment will come to state under Make in Maharashtra and 30 lakh jobs will be generated. Under Magnetic Maharashtra, 12 lakh crore investment will be done in the state and 37 lakh jobs will be created. Under chief minister employment scheme, 60 lakh jobs will be created. But, there are no updates regarding this announcement. On the contrary, signs of recession are seen in the country. The economy is witnessing a slowdown and the government figures are signs that the growth rate has come down.”

“The government is not willing to share the information about investments under Magnetic Maharashtra and Make in Maharashtra initiatives,Why the government is hiding the information,” he asked.

“At least 267 auto showrooms have been shut down in Mumbai, Pune and Aurangabad. But the government is not ready to speak on the issue and the chief minister himself is busy in the political campaigns,” he said.
