Pune: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) top leaders have taken cognisance of the unrest within the party over the issue of giving Vandana Chavan a second term as Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha and also holding the post of city unit chief of the party. Now, NCP leader Ajit Pawar has given clear indication that she would be relieved from the post of Pune city unit chief.
Recently, NCP had nominated Chavan to the Rajya Sabha instead of senior leader DP Tripathi. After Chavan was given the chance of becoming MP, there was lot of resistance within the party. However, no one had come forward to show their displeasure. As the city unit chief, she is facing strong opposition from within the party after the 2017 civic poll defeat.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar gave her the responsibility to lead the party’s Pune unit in 2010. In the 2017 civic polls, however, party didn’t attain victory in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) election, and they had to sit in opposition. NCP’s defeat in civic polls in 2017, issue of permission of construction of the Biodiversity Park (BDP) are some of the topics due to which Chavan faced strong opposition from within the party. NCP corporators Shanker Kemse and Balasaheb Bodke had also written a letter to senior leader Ajit Pawar to sack Chavan from city unit chief’s post in 2013. However, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar kept faith in her and rejected the corporators’ demand.
Now, in the background of upcoming State assembly elections, party wants a new face, which can stage strong agitations and raise different issues to take mileage in theassembly elections.
One of the party workers said, “Chavan has no mass base. She has more followers among NGO members than NCP party workers. She raises more issues that are related to NGOs.”
Another party worker said, “We want a city unit chief, who can communicate with the party workers and corproators. Now, there is lack of communication and discussion within the party.”
Vandan Chavan, NCP city unit chief, said, “I am happy to work as city unit chief in the interest of the party. However, I requested NCP leaders to relieve me from the city president’s responsibility. Since last six years, I am demanding this but every time NCP chief Sharad Pawar and senior leader Ajit Pawar rejected it. Now, finally the party has accepted my demand. I have connected the young generation with the party. I have taken up the issue of BDP, which is one of the major issues related to everyone.”
