Chakan Municipal Council to set up STP

Chakan Municipal Council to set up STP

PUNE: The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has recently directed the Chakan Municipal Council to set up a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). The council has decided to use Phytorid Wastewater Treatment Technology (details in the box) to treat the sewage instead of making a regular STP.

Secretary of Federation of Chakan Industries Dilip Batwal said, “Currently, there are more than 100 industries including automobile and other small and big scale industries. All industries have their individual effluent treatment plants. Around four lakh workforce comes from Pune every day and their waste along with residents’ waste is released directly into the Indrayani and Bhama river. The federation has been requesting the Chakan Municipal Council and Collector from last 10 years to set up an STP in Chakan but it was ignored,” Batwal said.

MPCB Pune Sub-regional Officer Upendra Kulkarni said, “Around 8 MLD of sewage is generated in Chakan which is directly released into the rivers. We have directed them continuously but the council had ignored it.”

Kulkarni said that the land at Agarwadi area in Chakan will have this new facility.

Chakan Municipal Council Chief Officer Nilam Patil said, “Until now, 12 tankers of sewage (one tanker of 500 litres) were collected from most of the areas of Chakan and a private contractor appointed by the council used to handle it. The STP will be constructed soon. But till then, the council under the direction of MPCB will be setting up the technology at Agarwadi.”

A new technology

  • Phytorid Wastewater Treatment Technology involves a constructed wetland exclusively designed for the treatment of municipal, urban, agricultural and industrial wastewater.
  • Kardal (Canna indica), also known as Indian Shot or Sarvajjaya, will be planted in this land.
  • This particular plant is known to have purification properties and reduces contaminants from sewage waste.
  • The sewage water will be treated through it and then it will be released into the water.
  • The council, with the directions of the MPCB, is planning to set up a Phytorid Wastewater Treatment Technology to treat the sewage.
