BRTS being compromised for Metro in Kasarwadi

Pimpri: Even after Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) registered a protest against the encroachment by MahaMetro on the BRT route on Old Mumbai-Pune Road at Kharalwadi, Pune Metro has started digging work in Kasarwadi.

Earlier, digging work on the BRTS route was stopped by PCMC in Kharalwadi but Mahametro was firm on carrying out the work. The civic body will now have to change the alignment of BRTS route on some stretches. This is going to defeat the intention of running the BRTS on the 13 km stretch on Old Mumbai-Pune Road.

During the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation, the Bombay High Court has been informed by PCMC that it is taking security measures for vehicles and passengers on BRT road. The PCMC has claimed that various measures have been taken on either side of the 13 km road. The work for the safety measures is still going on BRTS road. Meanwhile, the construction work of the pillar for the metro has started from March on the BRTS lane from Kharalwadi, Pimpri Chowk, Morwadi Finolex Chowk and shopping mall on behalf of Pune Metro.

Now, the Metro has started digging work on the BRT route near Kasarwadi. Some bus stations on BRTS will have to be removed. This is the second big obstruction in the way of BRTS route after digging the dedicated lane in Kharalwadi to Morwadi road. However, PCMC does not seem to be objecting to this development. This is going to result in the compromising of BRTS at these stretches.

PCMC Commissioner Shravan Hardikar recently visited the site along with the metro officials. Commissioner has told Metro officials to carry out construction work leaving BRTS route intact.

However, despite this suggestion, the work for Metro is going on rapidly and It has put barricades covering the stretch of BRTS route. It seems that PCMC is not in the mood to push its claim on BRTS. Therefore, it is assumed that PCMC is ready to sacrifice BRTS for Metro.
