Pune: A 20-year-old youth died while his cousin sustained severe injuries as his car hit a road divider while trying to show the ‘stunt’ live on social media.

The incident took place in the wee hours of Sunday (5.30 am) at the grid separator in Pimpri. The deceased has been identified as Shivam Prakash Jadhav of Kharalwadi in Pimpri, while his cousin Hrishikesh Vilas Pawar of Empire Estate in Chinchwad is undergoing treatment.

According to the police, Shivam studied in the second year of engineering at DY Patil College of Engineering. He was fond of swift driving.

“He had taken the keys of his maternal uncle’s car without him noticing and had taken his cousin along to give him a demo of his driving skills. While going from Chinchwad station towards Vallabh Nagar, he asked Hrishikesh to go live on Instagram to show the car’s speedometer. The speed was around 120 km/hr.

While trying to increase the speed, Shivam lost control over the steering and the car hit a divider at the grid separator of Pimpri,” said a police official.

Police officials said that Shivam’s father had died around seven years back and he was the only child. Shivam is survived by his mother and grandparents.

A relative said, “His maternal uncle, Satish Kadam knew about his nephew’s fondness for speed and had warned Shivam’s mother about the same.”
