Booking for transshipment facility at Pune airport is yet to take off

Pune: The new transshipment facility at Pune airport is still waiting for airlines to send cargo through domestic airlines to other international airports. This despite the fact there is a good demand from customers for sending their cargo to Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

The facility was announced by Ajay Kumar, Director, Pune airport on January 14 this year and later on January 23 the Customs issued a notification regarding this.

According to Customs officials, “The operation of the transshipment of export cargo from air cargo complex has started, but we are still looking for airlines to avail the facility. This is the third month which we are passing without any booking. The customers sending their cargo to Dubai and Abu Dhabi is getting a good response.”

The officials said that until now there has been no international cargo export from the Pune airport facility.

“The reason for the same is registration of airlines. One needs to know that the process of registration is not complex. They have to come to our office with the required documents of their company (airlines) and then proceed with the registration online. It will be difficult to say when the airlines, which have applied, will be registered but it shouldn’t take much time,” said the official. A station manager of an airline, on condition of anonymity, said, “Not a single company approached us to send their cargo through transshipment. When we approached a company in Chakan area, they said it is easy to send cargo via Mumbai airport, as it seems more expensive in Pune.”

Cargo service at Pune Airport
- International cargo facility was inaugurated at Pune Airport in June 2017.
- The officials were expecting cargo volume to touch 40,600 tonnes per annum. The actual quantity is dismal as an average of 430 kg cargo is exported every day against expected 20 metric tonnes per day.
- Of the four airlines that have international flights, only SpiceJet is using the international cargo facility.

Transshipment types
There are two types of transshipment facilities. One, transshipment by air, where cargo is moved from the air cargo complex by domestic carriers to gateway airport and from the gateway port the cargo is transported by international carriers. The other one is via road.
