BKS to protest against illegal use of GM seeds

PUNE: The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) will stage a two-day country-wide protest on August 8 and 9 at 2,000 places against use of genetically modified (GM) crops such as HTBT cotton, BT brinjal and GM mustard.

On August 8, the BKS will submit an appeal to the district collector in Pune. This was revealed by BKS National Secretary Dinesh Kulkarni at a press conference held in the city on Wednesday.

“We are staging a countrywide protest on August 8 and 9 against the promotion of genetically modified (GM) crops such as brinjal, cotton and mustard. It is important to keep a check on the illegal supply of GM seeds. In our letter, which we will be giving to the district collector, we will demand strict action against companies that are illegally supplying these seeds. Glyphocate that is used in HTBT cotton is carcinogenic (causing cancer) and stringent action should be taken against illegal promotion of such GM crops,” said Kulkarni. “The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee is supposed to check such practices but it is not doing enough.”
