Pune: The BJP-RPI (A) candidate, Himali Kamble, on Thursday won the Koregaon Park-Ghorpadi ward bypoll by a margin of 4,583 votes. Her nearest rival, NCP candidate Dhananjay Gaikwad, secured 3,316 votes.

Other major parties including the Congress, Shiv Sena and the MNS did not field candidates as a tribute to late deputy mayor and Himali's father Navnath Kamble, after whose death, the seat had fallen vacant a few months ago.

The total percentage of votes cast was 20.78 per cent as only 13,909 of the total 66,939 eligible voters turned up for voting on Wednesday. In all, 290 voters chose the NOTA option. Himali retained the lead from the first round of counting to the sixth. The bypoll was seen as a litmus test for the ruling BJP in the PMC to check whether the party's image is still intact.
