BJP-RPI (A) combine fields Himali Kamble

Seat fell vacant after Himali’s father Navnath Kamble died

Pune: District Guardian Minister Girish Bapat on Friday announced the candidature of Himali Kamble, daughter of late deputy mayor Navnath Kamble, for the civic bypolls to be held for the vacant Koregaon Park-Ghorpadi ward seat.

The seat has been vacant since Navnath Kamble died a few months ago due to a heart attack. Himali, an engineering student will represent the BJP-RPI (A) coalition.

The bypoll will be held on October 11 and the results will be declared the next day. RPI (A) leader Navnath Kamble was elected on a BJP ticket in the 2017 civic elections and became deputy mayor.

When Bapat was asked which symbol Himali will contest on, he said the candidate has been finalised but the decision about the election symbol will be taken later in consultation with RPI (A) leader Ramdas Athavale.

Other parties are yet to decide whether to contest the bypoll. “The Congress has announced that the party will not field a candidate if any family member of Kamble contests the bypoll. But the Congress will rethink if the family member contests on a BJP ticket,” Congress city unit chief Ramesh Bagwe told Sakal Times.

NCP city unit chief Vandana Chavan said her party is definitely going to contest the bypoll. “A final decision will be taken on September 18 after discussion with NCP leader Ajit Pawar,” she added.
