Pimpri: Political leadership in Pimpri-Chinchwad was in a fix over supporting the massive Maratha rally that was organised in Mumbai on Wednesday. Both Chinchwad and Bhosari MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) belong to the Maratha community. As Maratha voters form a large chunk of their voters’ base, they were in a dilemma whether to support the demands raised by the Maratha community openly.

Since the BJP is in power in Pimpri-Chinchwad, they fear the party leadership’s wrath in the State. To wriggle out of this situation, they put up hoardings across the city extending support to the Maratha rally on Tuesday.

The flex boards have photographs of BJP Chinchwad MLA Laxman Jagtap, Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge and House leader Eknath Pawar. Hoardings with photos of some opposition leaders were also installed in different localities in the city. They appealed to people to join the rally in large numbers. Thus, the Maratha rally got support from the ruling as well as opposition parties.

Over 50,000 people from Pimpri-Chinchwad belonging to the Maratha community joined the rally in Mumbai. Five coaches of Deccan Express were booked for them. Around 200 private buses were stationed at 17 important spots to take participants to Mumbai. Many social organisations working for the community mobilised people. Many people joined the rally on their private vehicles. Around 100 two and four-wheelers left for Mumbai the previous day.

Provision for breakfast for the participants was made at Samir Lawns in Ravet. Participants were coming from Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, who had a stopover in Ravet. The venue was communicated to participants through social media. Over 500 people left for the rally venue earlier to
manage the rally.
