Pune: The city unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received another setback on Thursday as Municipal Commissioner Kunal Kumar disqualified the party’s corporator Farzana Abdul Gafur Shaikh after the District Caste Certificate Verification Committee declared her caste certificate as invalid.

Earlier, the party’s corporator from Kalas-Dhanori ares , Kiran Jathar’s caste certificate was declared as invalid.

Shaikh contested the civic elections in February on a BJP ticket from the Phulenagar-Nagpur Chawl, which was a reserved seat for the OBC. Shaikh had submitted her OBC caste certificate.

However, complainant Bhagwan Jadhav approached the office of District Caste Certificate Verification Committee challenging her caste certificate.

In its decision dated July 5, the committee admitted the claim made by Jadhav and declared Shaikh’s caste certificate mentioning her caste as ‘Shimpi’ invalid.

It ordered confiscation of the original caste certificate of Shaikh immediately.

Shaikh is the second corporator disqualified by Municipal Commissioner Kumar within six months since the civic polls were held. Before Shaikh, NCP corporator Kishor Dhankawade was disqualified by Kumar on the same grounds.
