Pune: The city unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received another setback as the office of District Caste Certificate Verification Committee declared the caste certificate of party corporator Farzana Abdul Gafur Shaikh as invalid.
Earlier, party corporator from Kalas-Dhanori, Kiran Jathar’s, caste certificate was declared invalid.
Shaikh contested the civic elections in February on the BJP ticket from the Phulenagar-Nagpur Chawl, which was a reserved seat for the OBC. Shaikh had submitted her OBC caste certificate. However, the complainant, Bhagwan Jadhav approached the office of District Caste Certificate Verification Committee challenging her caste certificate.
In its decision dated July 5, the committee admitted the claim made by Jadhav and declared Shaikh’s caste certificate mentioning her caste as ‘Shimpi’ invalid. It ordered confiscation of the original caste certificate of Shaikh immediately.
The BJP has 98 elected corporators in the PMC. If the two corporators are disqualified, it’s strength would be reduced.
In another similar case, Municipal Commissioner Kunal Kumar disqualified NCP corporator Kishor Dhankawade following the caste certificate verification committee declaring his caste certificate as invalid.
