Pune: In an attempt to defend their party president the top brass in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) issued a letter on Thursday to all its MPs asking them to release statements to media houses demanding Congress President Rahul Gandhi to apologise for defaming BJP President Amit Shah.
This letter was issued hours after Supreme Court’s decision dismissing public interest litigation (PIL) in Justice BH Loya death case. Sakal Times is in the possession of this letter. Pune city MP Anil Shirole issued a press statement and made a demand as per party directives.
However, Rajya Sabha MP of BJP Sanjay Kakade did not issue a statement. When contacted, Kakade said, “I did not receive any letter from the party. Had I received it, I would have issued a letter.”
Shirole denied that the party had issued any directive. “I don’t know about party order. I issued a statement that Congress is making baseless allegations against BJP and their top leaders. It is our duty to present our side. Hence, I have issued a statement. Congress is challenging Supreme Court’s order which is not good for democracy,” he added.
The content of the letter
In a letter issued by Office Secretary of BJP in Parliament, Balasubrahmanyam Kamarsu. he mentioned, “Every MP should immediately give byte to the local TV asking Rahul Gandhi to apologise for defaming Amit Shah in justice Loya death case. Issue a press statement (the draft is being sent by email), hold a press conference by discussing with lawyers and with a perfect understanding of the judgement, re-tweet the tweets by central BJP leaders on this issue, tweet in your local language. Use all social media platform- WhatsApp and SMS to everybody.”
The letter has mentioned reasoning of directive saying, “The Supreme Court has dismissed a malicious and scandalous PIL in the case of death of Justice BH Loya on April 19, 2018. It has observed that it was a natural death and no independent inquiry is required. Court also observed that it is the misuse of PIL for personal agenda and petition amounts to criminal contempt. Congress did everything to malign the image of BJP National President Amit Shah over the years. In the natural death of Justice Loya, Congress took MPs delegation to the honourable president. Congress stands exposed badly. As Congress cannot defeat BJP, it has resorted to worst tactics which have repelled on Congress by this judgement. Congress President Rahul Gandhi must apologise.”
Vandana Chavan, Member of Parliament of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said, “BJP cannot suppress the voice of opposition. They have done a lot of things which people still don’t know. Now, they are pressuring their MPs to issue a statement. It is nothing but dictatorship. It is clearly showing that there is something wrong in the Justice Loya death case.” Mohan Joshi, senior Congress leader, said, “There is no smoke without fire. The BJP has issued a statement to condemn Congress Party leader. It shows there is something wrong. Otherwise, I don’t think any party can direct their MPs to issue a statement against Congress President Rahul Gandhi.”
