Beef mafia tries to run over cop

Pune: A policeman sustained injuries after some men involved in illegal cow slaughter in Dighi, tried to run over them with their SUV in the wee hours of Monday. An FIR of attempt to murder has been registered against the unidentified persons, besides charges for cow slaughter. The police have seized the SUV which carried a huge amount of beef.

Police officials said that they received a call at around 3 am about some people slaughtering a cow on the open space behind Pragati Hotel near Magazine Chowk in Dighi. Accordingly, two policemen were sent to verify the information. However, the accused persons started fleeing when they saw the cops. Some of them got into the SUV and tried to run over the cops when they chased them. Policeman Suraj Shinde (42) sustained severe leg injuries.

Meanwhile, the local residents had also reached there and they also chased the accused persons. Following which, they abandoned the vehicle and ran away. The policeman was rushed to a nearby hospital. 
Senior Police Inspector Khanderao Khaire, in-charge of Dighi police station, said, “The investigation is on to trace the accused persons. We have booked them for offences under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 332, 429, 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under sections of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act.”
