Pimpri: Shiv Sena MP from Maval, Shrirang Barne has held the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responsible for delay in implementation of the river improvement plan for Pavana and Indrayani rivers that flow through Pimpri Chinchwad.

Barne said, “I approached then Union environment minister Prakash Javadekar, who had asked for inclusion of Pavana and Indrayani rivers in the river improvement plan under the Namami Gange Programme of the Central government. However, the demand was ignored.”

Barne was speaking at a press conference in Pimpri on Tuesday. He said he tried to make the government include Pavana and Indrayani in the river improvement project. However, the BJP government did not respond positively to it.

Now, the local body led by the BJP will appoint a consultant for the project. It will spend Rs 4 crore on the plan, which is wastage of public money, he claimed. Shiv Sena MLA Gautam Chabukswar was also present on the occasion.

The Sena MP said during the municipal elections, the BJP had promised a complete waiver of double penalty tax for unauthorised structures. But it didn’t fulfill the promise.
With respect to the issue of bridge connecting Bopkhel Road,

Barne said, “Seven meetings were held with the Defence authorities. Three meetings were held in Pune. We have written to the Defence Ministry. Meetings were held with then Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and also Defence Minister Nirmala Seetharaman. The minutes of these meetings are also available. I have followed up with the Army, the Ammunition Factory, the Khadki Cantonment Board and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.”

Barne said, “I observed hunger strike giving assurance to residents to resolve the issue. As a Member of Parliament, I always supported Bopkhel residents in every way. Now, some leaders are claiming credit that they took efforts in getting the road to Bopkhel sanctioned, which is condemnable.” He said these leaders are at the forefront to claim credit, but they were not present during the agitation.
