Balgandharva Rangmandir to be redeveloped by PMC soon

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to redevelop Balgandharva Rangmandir. The PMC Standing Committee has allotted Rs 10 crore to construct a multi-storeyed cultural centre with ample parking and higher seating capacity.

Murli Mohol, Chairman of the Standing Committee said, “The Rangmandir is completing a golden jubilee year. So, we have decided to redevelop it. It is located in a prime location and every organisation, not only cultural but also political, prefers Balgandharva for programmes. We have decided to redevelop it with maximum capacity with more halls. Parking is another problem, so, we will consider more parking space. It will be multi-storeyed building with modern amenities.”

The Balgandharva Rangmandir is owned by the PMC. It has an auditorium and an exhibition hall. It is one of the most sophisticated and well-equipped theatres of India. The auditorium has air-conditioning. It has a capacity of 669 for ground floor and 320 in the balcony. It is spread over an area of 26,000 sq ft. It was inaugurated by former Union Home Minister Yaswantrao Chavan on June 26, 1968.

Late PL Deshpande, renowned writer and humorist, played an important role in the conception of this theatre.
