Auto drivers want action against cops demanding bribe

PUNE: After the city Police Commissioner asked citizens to give feedback on providing them more safety and security, the autorickshaw union members said that finally the Police Commissioner is taking the issue seriously, but has to take action against those (policemen) who force them to pay bribes.

Nitin Pawar, the convener of the Rickshaw Panchayat, said, “This is a good initiative, but it has be ensured that police don’t ask for bribes, whether the autorickshaw drivers are violating rules or not. Most of the time, the drivers complain that the police asks for bribes. Accountability should be fixed. This (collection of illegal money) should stop and action should be taken against erring policemen.”

He further added, “We have also received complaints from passengers that some autorickshaw drivers refuse to ply to some destinations. This behaviour of the drivers is not acceptable. They can’t refuse passengers. As per the rule, the licence can be impounded for three months. But, sometimes, we also receive complaints from autorickshaw drivers that policemen take rides and when asked for the fare, they seize the driving licence, which is sent to the Regional Transport Office (RTO). This should also stop and we request the Police Commissioner to take action against such officials.”

The autorickshaw drivers said that they have to wait for a long time to get their character certificate from the police. “The certificate is required for getting a permit (batch) from RTO to ply the autorickshaw. The policemen make us visit several times to give the licence and in most cases, they demand a bribe. As it is a matter of employment, most people pay the bribe. It is the common grievance of the drivers,” Pawar added.

MAJOR EXPECTATIONS
- Issuing Character Certificate on time in a transparent manner.
- Action against policemen for asking bribes without any violation.
- Police should not seize driving licence of auto drivers for silly reasons.
