Army’s move to recruit Women into the Military Police welcomed

PUNE: For the first time in the history of Indian Army, women will be recruited as soldier general duty, popularly known as ‘jawans’ for their male counterparts. The Army has released a notification to recruit ‘Women Military Police’.

Around 100 women candidates will be able to apply for the duty in Indian Army.  The Army started the online registration for recruitment in the Corps of military and the last date for filing application has been fixed as June 8.

In an open letter, retired IPS officer and former DGP, Meeran Borwankar had previously written to Army Chief General Bipin Rawat asking him to give a chance to women before declaring them unfit for the Army.

She had written it when the discussions on ‘women in army’ were making headlines. Commenting on this new recruitment, She said, “This is a welcome development. I support it wholeheartedly.”

POWER OF UNIFORM
Borwankar said, “Uniform has a tremendous power for social change. Girls should apply and make full use of the excellent career opportunity.”

Major Shridhar Vhankate, National Cadet Corps (NCC) in-charge in Fergusson College  said girls have always been enthusiastic and interested in joining NCC, though they have limited options to work on the field later.

NEW OPPORTUNITY
“In most of the batches I have been training, I have observed equal number of female participation in NCC. Girls are more interested in joining NCC. This new opportunity will definitely help many girls who have been wanting to take up field work in army,” said Vhankate.

Supriya Gahliyan, second year NCC cadet from Fergusson College said, “We have ‘Ragdas’ in NCC. Whenever any cadet makes any mistake or fails to meet the target, he/she gets a physical exercise as punishment. I have observed my colleagues in batch and juniors enthusiastically performing the tasks from pumping to push-ups. They enjoy it. According to me if the girls are given a chance to perform, then they can definitely prove their physical power to stand on field.”

GOOD EXPOSURE
“There is a parallel debate going on whether women should have National Defence Academy (NDA) entry or not. But I feel our infrastructure needs to be improved. It is necessary to give exposure to girls,” said Gahliyan

Aishwarya Khandalkar, an ex-NCC cadet, said, “It makes you feel inclusive when you get an opportunity to be part of such a big responsibility. Women need an opportunity to try or explore and this recruitment will help us prove our capabilities to be in army.”

ELIGIBITIY CRITERIA
- Female candidates should be between age group of 17-21
- Education qualification should be at least Std X qualified
- Unmarried, widows of defence personnel, divorcées can apply
