Anil Shirole to meet Harsh Vardhan to expedite JICA plan

Pune: In order to push the ambitious but pending project of freeing the Mula and Mutha rivers from pollution, city MP Anil Shirole has sought time from Union Minister of Science, Technology and Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan to discuss the project on Wednesday.

The focus of the discussion will be on pushing the Rs 1,000 crore project and on removing obstacles so that the project work could start as soon as possible. The project is also known as JICA - the Japan International Cooperation Agency - which is funding it. The plan has been pending with the Union government for several months despite its assurance to provide funds for the same.

The project is planned and will be executed under the National River Conservation Plan (NRCP). Sources from the civic body said, "The project is scheduled to be completed by January 2022. However, the actual work of the project is yet to start. So sensing a delay in its execution, Shirole requested the minister to hold a meeting to expedite the project.

The project cost will be shared between the Union government and the PMC, the implementing agency for the project, in an 85:15 ratio respectively. The share of the Central government in the project will be Rs 841.72 crore while the PMC will spend Rs 148.54 crore.
