'All stakeholders must work together to solve environmental problems'

PUNE: Solutions to environmental problems can be found only when all stakeholders work together, said Justice Swatanter Kumar at the conference on 'Recent Tecno-Legal Strategies for Tidy Environment' on Saturday. The conference was held at Mahratta Chamber Of Commerce Industries & Agriculture Trade Tower (MCCIA) and was organised by Environmental Club of India.

Speaking during the valedictory session, Justice Kumar presented the example of Ganga and Yamuna and how various project on these rivers were made possible as many forces joined hands. "Economic balance leads to resolution of any problem. Economic principles should be aimed, but not be considered as solutions to environmental problems. We all should work to maintain complete management of waste. If we go on neglecting our responsibility, we can see a change in the weather affecting us all. We see sudden drop of temperature in summer and very hot days in winter," said Kumar.

He also highlighted that various studies do not collect the basic data properly, which further misleads actual conditions of the environment and no proper steps can be planned. "Data collection has to be perfect. For example, we divided river Ganga into four sections and we started dealing with two of them. However, those who collected data did not know how many drains in these sections directly led into the river. This highlighted that the data that the team collected otherwise did not have any basis," said Justice Kumar.

He also said that one common solution that can be provided to the huge crisis of waste is to segregate waste at source. "No technical solution can solve the problem of waste production. We need to make it a habit for the common person to segregate waste at source. Segregation done at appropriate stage can help in using waste for composting. So the question is why can't we use recycled waste for regeneration purposes. Use the waste to produce energy. Then it will become a viable unit. Landfills get blocked. We learn that people die because of landfills as the methane gas produced in it catches fire," said Justice Kumar.
