Airport authority requests CM to give 35 acres of land

Pune: The much-awaited new terminal building at the Pune airport will be constructed within 30 months, as its tender was awarded to Mumbai-based ITD Cementation India Ltd recently. Now, the airport authority has requested Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to hand over 35 acres land, which the State government owns so that construction work can start from October 25.

The work is expected to get over by 2021. The airport will have the capacity to handle passenger traffic of 20 million per year. The new terminal building is expected to support an increased number of flights, including short distance international flights to south-east Asian countries.

Airport Director Ajay Kumar told Sakal Times, “In view of the proposed terminal building, we requested CM to transfer 35 acres land from government soon. We can then proceed to construct the building by October. If land is handed over to us soon, we will shift the cargo, airline offices, CWE office and BSO yard to this land.”

At present, the cargo facility is on the eastern side and the airline office is in front of the terminal building. “The tender for the ultra-modern terminal building, which will have state-of-the-art facilities, has been awarded to Mumbai-based company ITD Cementation India Ltd. The lowest bid was submitted by the company among the eight top listed companies. The terminal building expansion is expected to last for 30 months from the day the work starts. To start the project, we have to shift all these offices,” said Kumar.

The building would be GRIHA-4 compliant. The clearance is expected to come within a month, after which actual construction of the project would begin, he said.
