AICTE curriculum to add Indian authors

PUNE: To make examples simple and local for students, an All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) expert committee has prepared a list of books by Indian authors and publishers as per the model curriculum of the council.

AICTE Chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe said these books draw upon the experience of Indian authors and contextualised to Indian settings. Therefore, it will aid the students in better learning of the concepts and also improve their quality.

While speaking to Sakal Times, Sahasrabudhe highlighted benefit of having books by Indian author. “When there are problems or examples given, we can refer to Indian conditions and students can immediately relate and understand it, rather than only studying foreign examples,” he said.

AICTE had formulated an expert committee consisting of faculty members from all domains who reviewed and suggested the books.

“Many of the books given for reference in the model curriculum are foreign books which are costlier not less than Rs 6,000-7,000. While most of the books by Indian authors are available at one-third price of the foreign books. Therefore, for student’s convenience we have prepared a list of Indian authors,” said Sahasrabudhe.

When asked about the ratio of Indian authors, he said, “There are plenty of publishers and authors in India, but only few are of good quality. Hence, we have selected the best from those to maintain the quality of the education.”

A letter by Sahasrabudhe stated that Indian authors and publishers need more encouragement among students and teachers. This will also prompt many Indian authors to pen new technical books and in new areas too, augmenting technical education in the Indian scenario.
