PUNE: The State government has cancelled the appointment of advocate Ujjwal Nikam as special public prosecutor in the murder case of Mohsin Shaikh, who was killed during the communal riots in Hadapsar in 2014. Nikam had requested the government to cancel his appointment.

Mohsin’s father Sadique Shaikh in a message to Nikam said, “Cancellation of appointment is very shocking to me. There could be various reasons for the delay in trial despite the government’s assurances given to me. We’re not blaming you for delays. Please ignore the allegations made by others. You are requested to reconsider my and my family’s request to represent Mohsin murder case.”

Shaikh was attacked and murdered by a mob on June 2, 2014 in the violence that had erupted in the area due to a controversial post on social media.

Half an hour before the incident, Hindu Rashtra Sena Chief Dhananjay Desai had held a meeting in Hadapsar. He delivered a speech at the meeting, which allegedly instigated the violence, police chargesheet states.
