PUNE: Around 20 actors, who have been students of Roshan Taneja at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), came together at the Institute, on Saturday, for the release of Taneja’s biography. His felicitation is the first in the Guru Vandana series, under which living legends of cinema associated with FTII will be honoured.
Taneja was presented a designed-for-the-occasion silk stole by FTII Director Bhupendra Kainthola, carrying the FTII logo and the Wisdom Tree insignia. Actor-turned-MP Shatrughan Sinha honoured him with a Puneri pagdi. The 90-minute show was compered by Tom Alter (Head, Dept of Acting, FTII), who also read aloud the three-page foreword to the book, written by Shabana Azmi. The book is titled ‘Moments of Truth: My Life with Acting’.
Shatrughan Sinha and filmmaker Subhash Ghai recalled their FTII student days under ‘Dronacharya’ Taneja saab’s tutelage. Roshan Taneja (now 86) was HoD Acting for 13 years in FTII, from 1963-1976. Jaya Bachchan, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Danny Denzongpa and many others were trained at FTII under him. Six actors, who trained under him, won 13 National Awards for the best actor.
Actor Om Puri’s wife Nandita Puri and son Ishaan announced on the occasion that the newly formed Om Puri Foundation intends to initiate the Om Puri Scholar Award for the most deserving student at FTII.
To mark the occasion of Roshan Taneja’s felicitation, Shatrughan Sinha also announced a new Guru Vandana scholarship amounting to Rs 50,000 for the Acting Department and also presented a cheque of Rs 50,000 towards the Sonakshi Sinha Scholarship for any female acting student coming from an economically challenged background.
