The accused and his accomplices are also accused of breaking into several flats including that of Vikas Kakatkar of Deccan Education Society, which runs Fergusson College.  The arrested accused has been identified as Jitsingh alias Jitu Rajpalsingh Tak (24), a resident of Hadapsar.

“He had been changing his hideouts frequently and had been evading arrest. On June 20, policeman Prashant Gaikwad received information that Tak is playing cricket in Nigdi. Accordingly, our team members reached there and laid a trap. However, to avoid suspicion they carried cricket gear and approached him for playing cricket. After getting him busy in talking, other team members reached there and overpowered him,” said Senior Police Inspector Nitin Bhosale-Patil, in-charge of Crime Branch Unit I.

According to police, Tak and his three accomplices broke into Deshpande’s house on Bhandarkar Road on the night of  December 18-19 last year. “However, they had to return empty-handed as they didn’t find anything except books,” said Police Sub Inspector Dinesh Patil.

Tak’s two accomplices are still on the run while the third one is lodged in jail in a dacoity case. Police officials said that they have recovered stolen gold ornaments worth Rs 1.65 lakh which were stolen from other burglaries.
