Pune: Passengers at Pune airport can now use a facility of 'self check-in kiosk' to save their time, which they spend in queues for getting boarding passes at counters. The Airport Authority of India (AAI), Pune, urged fliers to use this facility.

Earlier, there were two self check-in kiosks for Air India, Jet Airways, IndiGo and Lufthansa passengers and now fliers of three more airlines can hope for a smooth acquisition of boarding passes at the Pune airport. AAI administration has installed an additional self check-in kiosk at the airport and included Vistara, Go-Air and Air Asia in the list of airlines that can use the facility. The self check-in kiosks were first installed at Pune airport in January 2015.

Frequent fliers have been demanding that the facility should be opened for all airlines instead of keeping it limited to a few airlines. Observers had also pointed out that there was low awareness among passengers about availability of self-check in kiosks.

Ajay Kumar, Airport Director, said, "Earlier only Jet Airways, Air India, Indigo and Lufthansa were using it. Now, passengers flying with Vistara, Go Air, Air Asia too can use the self check-in kiosks. It would basically help shorten the queues."

Amit Panday, a traveller, said, "It's a welcome respite. Those who are well versed with technology can certainly use them and help reduce the queues."

Dhairyasheel Vandekar, Aviation Expert, said that the airport administration needs to do more to make proper use of the kiosks. He also felt that there was a need of more such kiosks.

"I have recently written to AAI, suggesting that they should make the kiosks more visible and urge passengers to use them using the public address systems, digital boards among other things. They can also deploy dedicated floor walkers at all times of flight operations, either from AAI or the airlines to inform, guide and assist passengers for using these kiosks," said Vandekar.

Time saver
Airport authorities say that use of kiosks save passengers' time up to 10 to 15 minutes. By using the kiosks, passengers travelling with cabin baggage can directly check into the airport.
