70th Army Day to be celebrated today

Pune: The Army Day will be celebrated on January 15 to mark the taking over of the Indian Army by the first Indian Commander-in- Chief, Lieutenant General (Later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa, OBE, on January 15, 1948. 

To commemorate this momentous occasion the Southern Command organised a wreath laying ceremony at National War Memorial in Camp. The event was graced by Lt Gen DR Soni, GOC-in-C Southern Command.

The Southern Command, which is responsible for guarding the western and southern borders, has taken part in all major military operations since Independence. The command has also provided succour to  citizens in times of natural calamities and other 
disasters.

A number of events have been planned to mark this day in Pune, which is home to many military establishments, and other places that come under Southern Command.
