Pune: Five persons drowned in three separate incidents during the Ganesh immersion in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The incidents were reported at Hadpasar, Wakad and Markal in Khed taluka of Pune district.
According to the Pune police, two brothers met a watery grave in Hadapsar, two boys drowned in Wakad and one more person drowned in Markal during the immersion.
In Hadapasar, the brothers, who came for the Ganesh idol immersion at Gaydara lake at Wakdi, drowned while they went inside the lake to immerse the Ganesh idol.
The incident occurred around 6.30 am on Wednesday. Both deceased brothers were identified as Omkar Jagtap (13) and Rohit Jagtap (9), both residents of Wadki.
According to fireman Jambu Gaikwad of the Hadapsar fire station, both deceased boys, along with five others of their age, entered the lake. The boys couldn’t judge the depth of the lake and went deep inside, which turned out to be the reason of their death.
“All seven of them lost their way and people present there saved five of them but unfortunately, the two brothers drowned,” added Gaikwad. Fire brigade and locals recovered the bodies of the brothers.
In another incident, which took place at Wakad, Sonaji Shelke (15) and Pawan Varkhad lost their lives while immersing the Ganesh idol in Mula river. The deceased teenagers were residents of Balewadi and went along with their friends for the immersion at the ghats of Mula river near Kasapate Vasti.
According to the Pimpri fire brigade station, Varkhad’s body was recovered around 9 pm on Tuesday while Shelke’s body was recovered on Wednesday at 3.45 pm.
In the third incident, an 18-year-old teenager drowned during the immersion in Indrayani river at Markal in Khed taluka.
