Mumbai: The number of mobile internet users are estimated to reach 478 million by June 2018, according to a report titled Mobile Internet in India 2017. The report was published jointly by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and KANTAR-IMRB. The report suggests that affordability of mobile internet has been the primary factor for the internet penetration.
The report estimated that 291 million urban mobile internet users and 187 million rural mobile internet users as of December 2017.
The report highlights that young students are among the top users of the mobile internet, followed by middle-aged and older men show greater propensity of using social networking and browsing; with old men having lower tendency to go for audio/video streaming. The report says that social networking and browsing is popular among working women while text chatting being popular among non-working women.
According to report, 46% of urban users and 57% of rural users being under the age of 25.
Urban India has around twice the proportion of users over the age of 45, while the age range of 25 to 44 has an almost equal distribution of users in urban and rural areas.
According to the report, the number of mobile internet users has increased by 17.22% from December 2016 to reach 456 million users by December 2017.
The report indicates that urban area is expected to show a slowdown, while rural India with only 18% mobile internet penetration is clearly the next area of growth.
