Pune: After two uterus (womb) transplants last year, the city will soon witness the third such transplant on January 26. The authorisation committee at Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) gave the approval on Friday to Galaxy Care Hospital.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, Director of Galaxy Care Hospital, said that he was very happy to get the approval for the third transplant operation.

“Our third patient is a woman from Karnataka, who does not have a uterus since birth. It has been three years since she got married. Her mother will be donating her uterus. Her mother was not getting her menses since last two years. However, since we started medication six months back, she has been getting her periods regularly. We have already retrieved the woman’s egg and she will undergo transplant on January 26,” said Puntambekar. The authorisation committee at SGH interviewed the patient, donor and the family and then granted the permission.

Puntambekar also informed that there are around 450 women who had consulted the doctors at the hospital for this transplant. “There are also women from abroad who have paid us a visit. Many women, who do not have a uterus from birth, are visiting us for help in this regard,” he added.

Speaking to Sakal Times about previous two patients, Puntambekar said that both the women are doing well. The embryo transplant for both the patients will happen in the near future as their mensuration cycle has been perfect since the transplant.
