35 pc rise in sales  of goods made by Yerwada jail inmates

Pune: In what comes as a good news for prison inmates, Superintendent of Yerwada Prison UT Pawar on Tuesday informed that the Diwali sale of items made by prison inmates recorded 35 per cent rise this season compared to last year.

The superintendent said that materials worth Rs 20.57 lakh were sold out in just one week and the figure for the same year was at Rs 15 lakh, clearly indicating a better demand of goods made by prison inmates. Pawar said that sofa sets, patio chairs, carved mandir, wardrobes and lantern were in high demand this season. “It feels great to see a record sale this season. Our officials and prison inmates were happy to see the response received from people,” added Pawar.

Apart from these items, the other goods included clothing, cotton towels, blankets, bedsheets and handkerchiefs which also received a good response.

An official of the Prison Department said that the focus was on handling customers in a better way. “We see a high footfall and we were focused this season to convert this footfall into our customers. Items displayed were useful ones which attracted our customers. The items ranged from Rs 50 to Rs 15,000 and so we could sale most of our products. We provide basic training to these inmates who then start preparation of the items well in advance,” added the official.
