Pune: A 51-year-old musician was assaulted, kidnapped and extorted in broad daylight in Koregaon Park and later threatened with dire consequences if he doesn’t submit to the demands of his three kidnappers. Although the police have arrested the trio, the incident has shocked the posh neighbourhood.
The accused have been identified as Atul Kshetre (37), Aniket Ovhal (32), both residents of Lohegaon, and Sunny Shetty (26) of Tingre Nagar. The trio assaulted, kidnapped and extorted money from music teacher Shrikumar Steve, a resident of Tingre Nagar, who runs a music institute in Koregaon Park.
On July 21, the trio entered the premises of Abba Institute of Music at bungalow no 10, near Central Park Hotel in Koregaon Park, under the guise of taking admission in the institute. After being informed by Steve that admissions were closed, the trio continued the conversation by speaking about his family members. However, when Steve questioned them about their identities, one of them slapped him and demanded Rs 6 lakh, the police said.
When the complainant told them that he doesn’t have money with him, they assaulted him and snatched valuables worth Rs 1.25 lakh. They also forced him to sign a cheque of Rs 4.5 lakh and took him forcefully in their car to a ground near Symbiosis College on Airport Road. They left him there and threatened him with dire consequences if he doesn’t fulfill their demand of Rs 6 lakh.
The trio continued calling him with extortion demands, after which the victim reported the matter to the police, who in turn laid a trap and arrested them on Thursday. On police instructions, the victim called the accused persons to his office to pay them the extortion money on Thursday. The trio fell into the trap and were arrested by the police.
The police have registered a case under sections 392 (Punishment for robbery), 384 (Punishment for extortion) and 363 (Punishment for kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code.
