2K atheletes to take part in AIPWCC

Pune: Over 2,000 participants have gathered in the city for the 66th All India Police Wrestling Cluster Championship (AIPWCC) 2017 which will be held at the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) campus in Wanawadi.

The events under the aegis of All India Police Sports Control Board will be held from  October 27 to 31. The star attractions will be wrestling champion Geeta Phogat, Asian Gold Medalist in Kabaddi Gurprit Singh, Olympian Sandeep Kumar and others.

At a press conference, SRPF Special Inspector General of Police Suresh Kumar Mekala, who is also the Organising Secretary, said, “A total of 35 teams from State Police organisations and Central Paramilitary forces are taking part in the championship. Total participants include 1,540 men and 501 women. The competitions will be conducted by officials of the national federations as per the prevailing international rules. Many players of national and international repute are taking part in the championship.”

The competition will be held in wrestling, weightlifting, kabaddi and boxing for both men and women. The events will be held in two sessions in the morning and the evening wherein 29 trophies and 400 medals will be given away. Director General of Maharashtra Police  (DGP) Satish Mathur will be the chief guest for the inaugural function to be held at SRPF Group II grounds on October 29 at 4.45 pm and the closing cum prize distribution ceremony will be held at the same venue at 4.30 pm on October 31.
