Pune: Two history sheeters who chose Pune as their destination for committing crimes were for the first time arrested by the Pune police in the recent five cases of chain snatching in the city.
On Tuesday, Sakal Times had reported that 15 incidents of chain snatching have taken place this year as against 97 cases in 2017.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Pankaj Dahane said Pune police have solved six of the 15 cases and are in process of solving others. Senior Police Inspector Nitin Bhosale Patil of Crime Branch Unit I said the accused Jafar Irani (28) and Javed Jafari (20) are involved in eight chain snatching cases in past three months. "While Jafari is accused in 23 chain snatching cases including 17 in Jalgaon, Irani is absconding in a Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act case," added Bhosale Patil.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Sameer Shaikh said policemen Sachin Jadhav and Prashant Gaikwad received a tip-off about the location of the accused following which a team of Crime Branch Unit I nabbed them. "Gold ornaments of 148 gm worth Rs 4.5 lakh were recovered from the arrested accused. They committed five chain snatchings this year in the jurisdiction of Kothrud, Alankar and Chatuhshrungi police stations," added Shaikh.
