Pune: Around 195 policemen have now become a part of ‘Police Kaka’ initiative of the city police, whereby policemen act as ‘friends’ and ‘guides’ of school and college students. City Police Commissioner Rashmi Shukla had received requests from school children for the need to have a point of contact with policemen to solve their problems like ragging, molestation, eve teasing, bullying and various other issues.

“A police head constable will be assigned to three to four schools or colleges. He will visit these educational premises every week and his or her phone number and name will be displayed on educational campuses,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Sudhir Hiremath in a press conference at the commissioner’s office in Camp.

The police said that posters with phone numbers and photos of ‘Police Kaka will be displayed in schools and colleges. Police officials said that many girls are harassed outside and inside school premises and there are incidents when school students enter into scuffles, which creates chaos.

Police officials also need to tackle issue of molestation in schools and colleges. An assistant police inspector at the police station level will be the nodal officer in each police station to monitor the work of ‘Police Kaka’.  Similarly, a deputy commissioner of police level officer will monitor the work at the zonal level.

At school level, a teacher will act as a nodal officer to check work related with the ‘Police Kaka’ initiative. As per the city police, there are over 1,180 schools and colleges in the city and 10 lakh students study in them.
