Pune: A 16-year-old girl who had gone on a trekking trip at Tunga Fort, died after falling into a gorge (200 feet) near Lonavla on Sunday evening. According to the Lonavla rural police, the deceased girl identified as Ishita Mate was a resident of Hadapsar and she had booked her trip to the fort through an online website.

“A group of 15 had arrived at the fort on Sunday morning. At around 3 pm, the group was returning from the fort when the girl slipped and fell into the gorge. As there as no mobile network in the area, it took time for the trekking group to inform the police about the incident. After the group reached the base, they informed the locals about the incident,” said a police official from Lonavla rural police station.

Members of the Shivdurga Mitra Rescue Foundation (SMRF) started the search for Mate’s body which was found late in the evening on Sunday. After an autopsy, Mate’s body was handed over to her parents. The police said that the girl died due to multiple injuries. The Lonavla police are further investigating the case.

The police said that the 15-member trekking team had come from Mumbai and Pune. S Gaikwad of SMRF said that the girl must have lost her balance causing her death.
