14-year-old boy dies while playing kabaddi

A 14-year-old student of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Pimple Jagtap, Shirur taluka died while playing kabaddi on the school premises

Pune: A 14-year-old student of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Pimple Jagtap, Shirur taluka died while playing kabaddi on the school premises late on Saturday evening. His parents refused to accept the body suspecting foul play. However, after assurances from the district administration and Pune rural police, they cremated the body on Sunday afternoon. 

As per the Shikrapur police, the deceased, Gaurav Amol Vetal, a native of Nhavara in Shirur taluka, studied in Std VII. The incident took place at 6 pm when, as part of the annual sports competition, Vetal was playing kabaddi and fell to the ground. The other students and teachers thought it was part of the game, but when he did not rise and started feeling uneasy, his sports teacher and students tried to give him first aid and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. His parents were informed by a driver at 8.30 pm. 

His parents suspected foul play and asked for his post mortem report, but refused to accept his body. After assurances by Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) Bhau Galande and Police Inspector Ramesh Galande of action against the guilty if any, the parents took away his body to their native place Nhavara and cremated him on Sunday afternoon. 

Gaurav's uncle Nilesh Vetal said, “Gaurav had earlier complained against the school administration. Also, after his death, the school authorities didn't inform us. Therefore, we demand that the there should be a thorough probe into the matter and how Gaurav died.” 

Inspector Galande, in-charge of Shikrapur police station, said, “We have registered a case of accidental/suspicious death. Further action will be taken based on an enquiry.”
