‘Traditional healthcare systems resistant to change’

‘Traditional healthcare systems resistant to change’

- What is the concept of your start-up?
CliniVantage Healthcare Technologies is a smart future facing healthcare solution provider.

It is a Bespoke Technology Product and Solutions provider organization delivering information management and analytics value propositions to healthcare industry in public and private sector on proprietary framework. It is a digital data mobility platform that is designed to transform the way healthcare stakeholders interact with each other. An end-to-end solution to not only deliver efficient healthcare but also enhance the patient experience.

- What are the challenges that you have faced?
The tech industry and healthcare profession are disconnected. More clinical guidelines are needed. Many existing digital tools address health issues in haphazard ways. Budgetary and resource concerns are there and existing technology stack is obsolete. Traditional healthcare systems or organizations are very resistant to change. It’s like the old saying goes, ‘Why fix it if it’s not broken?’ This mentality can cause an organisation to fall behind competition.

- What kind of support the government should give?
The Government has the most important role to play. It is the responsibility of regulators to keep all stakeholders in line to leverage the potential of technologies for healthcare and avoid dystopic outcomes.

Governments should listen to people, technology companies, drug producers, healthcare providers and shape policy according to real needs while keeping pace with innovation. Policymakers must find a balance between safety and innovation. They should promote the safe use of digital health technologies while offering regulations to separate the wheat from the chaff. They should think about all potential legal consequences of usage of healthcare technologies, including data protection.

- What policies you feel are needed to help healthcare start-ups in India?
In healthcare, the privacy standards and security standards are important. Health record systems require shields to ensure that the data is accessible when needed and that the information is not used, disclosed, retrieved, altered or deleted improperly while being stored or transmitted. The security standards work with the privacy standards to create controls and security. Healthcare provider must implement technical safeguards as part of its security plan. Physical standards are used to safeguard healthcare provider’s electronic information systems, related equipment and the buildings housing the systems from hazards and invasion.

- What are the legal issues in digital healthcare?
One of the foremost questions is whether the technology is capable of providing correct medical advice, and to what extent can reliance be placed on such advice.

The sensitivities involved in providing medical advice are intricate. Thus, the standards of care to be observed by medical professionals are high. For a technology-related breach, it is unclear how the accountability and liability would be affixed.

Data privacy has gained importance, promoting the use of extensive care in exchange of information. Using technology in the healthcare sector could result in exposure of the health- and medical-related information of patients to technological service provider. While data privacy laws provide protection against misuse of data, these laws and their implementation may not be sophisticated enough to ensure adequate comfort to consumers where latest technology is involved.

- How booming is this industry and what is its outlook?
According to Transparency Market Research (TMR), global digital health market revenue of USD 179.6 billion in 2016 would expand with a compounded annual growth rate of 13.40 % to attain revenue of USD 536.6 billion over the forecast period from 2017 and 2025. The upcoming 5 years will mark significant advancements in healthcare. A few are digital health tools for management of chronic diseases, customized services for patients in hospitals using patient generated data, personalized health services, digital health innovations to focus on human behavior, digital technology will be treated as assets and digital tech will improve analytics to improve performance.
