Pune: The Pune Taxi-men Consumers Cooperative Society has demanded that metered taxis and auto-rickshaws be retained on the Pune railway station premises.

Zamil Abdul Shaikh and Ambadas Sudhakar Dhage have written a letter to Divisional Railway Manager, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Pune  and District Collector on this issue on Friday.

According to the Pune Taxi-men Consumers Cooperative Society, metered taxi and auto-rickshaws are providing services at the railway station for the last 70 years.

As per Regional Transport Office (RTO) rules, these metered taxi and auto-rickshaws are allowed to pick up and drop passengers within the limits of 200 metres. But now the railway authority has removed them from the railway premises.

“The owners of the taxi and auto-rickshaws purchased their vehicles on  bank loans. The families of these owners and drivers are fully dependent on their vehicles. There is no permit for Ola and Uber to run on the roads, but they have been given permission to run from the railway station. Those who are running with valid permit - metered taxis and auto-rickshaws -  have been removed from the station and this is an injustice for them,” stated the society in a statement.
