PUNE: A fact finding committee consisting members of various Dalit and leftist organisations has demanded an inquiry into the death of Pooja Sakat. The group of 260 organisations under the banner of Bhima-Koregaon Shaurya Din Prerna Abhiyan, alleged that Sakat didn’t commit suicide and was murdered.
MN Kamble, President of Bharip Bahujan Mahajan Sangh, Pune, said, “Instead of registering a case of murder, the police have registered a case of suicide. The deceased’s uncle had registered a case of murder, but the police filed it as a case of suicide to protect Sambhaji Bhide and Milind Ekbote from charges against them in the Koregaon-Bhima riots case.”
“The 19-year-old girl was the prime witness in the Koregaon-Bhima riots case and hence, she was killed,” added Kamble.
Sakat, whose house was burnt during the Koregaon-Bhima riots, was found dead in a well at Son on April 22. The girl had been missing since she left home to go to a nearby market on April 21. Her brothers Jaideep and Suresh had gone to Ahmednagar on April 20 and found their sister missing on their return on April 21. A day later, Pooja’s body was recovered from a well, which created a tension in the area. After her body was found, a complaint was registered by her uncle Dilip Sakat, a resident of Kedgaon, in Ahmednagar.
Harshali Potdar, an activist from Mumbai whose house was searched by Pune police on April 17 in connection with Elgar Parishad said, “The police should arrest Sambhaji Bhide and others involved in the death of Sakat. The police are not taking any action despite having enough evidence against Bhide and Ekbote for the roles they played in the Koreagaon-Bhima riots.”
The committee members said that the committee comprising various lawyers and judges has visited the spot and have inquired with the family members of the deceased.
Her brother Jaideep Sakat and father Suresh Sakat have said that the girl was abducted and murdered, after which her body was thrown inside the well. However, it was posted on social media even before her post-mortem report was released that she has committed suicide.
