Pointing out that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had banned the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1948, Deputy Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma demanded that the government should place a bronze plaque below the statue of Patel, which will be installed in Gujarat, to let people know what Patel thought about the RSS.

Pune: Pointing out that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had banned the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1948, Deputy Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma demanded that the government should place a bronze plaque below the statue of Patel, which will be installed in Gujarat, to let people know what Patel thought about the RSS.

Sharma was on a visit to the city on Monday. He was addressing a press conference.

The Patel statue located near the Sardar Sarovar dam in Gujarat is considered to be the world’s tallest. It will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31.

Sharma said, “While the statue will be inaugurated, the government should also install a bronze plaque of the written order banning the RSS, which was issued by Sardar Patel on January 4, 1948 after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.”

“The government has named the statue of Sardar Patel as the ‘Statue of Unity’. However, the statue has been made in China,” he claimed.

The Congress leader criticised the prime minister for not speaking over important issues likes rising fuel prices, weakening of Indian rupee and ongoing #MeToo movement. He said, “The PM speaks a lot but he does not speak on the issues which are of national concern. We have lost all hopes but as an opposition party we have to perform our duties of asking him questions.” Sharma accused the BJP of carrying out a major ‘cover-up operation’ in the country to hide details of the Rafale deal.

“It was Modi’s personal decision to exclude HAL from the contract and award it to Reliance. The government now has got into a major cover-up operation to hide the Rafale scam. Therefore, we are appealing to the Supreme Court to seal all the files and notings in connection with the deal,” he said.

PM’s silence on women’s issue
Commenting on the #MeToo movement, Sharma said, “The silence of the PM, who claims to be concerned about the safety of women, on this issue is unacceptable. He should have reassured the country but people are still waiting to hear from him.”
