The government resolution states that the duration for farm loan waiver is between April 1, 2012 and June 30, 2016. So, those who borrowed farm loans from 2008 to April 1, 2012 and the those who sought loans after June 2016 will not get benefit of the scheme

Pune: Senior Congress leader Sachin Sawant claimed that the farm loan waiver scheme launched by the BJP government will benefit only five lakh farmers. The BJP is cheating farmers by saying it is a historic  scheme which would benefit 89 lakh farmers, he claimed.

He was speaking to the media at the Congress Bhavan on Saturday.

“The government resolution states that the duration for farm loan waiver is between April 1, 2012 and June 30, 2016. So, those who borrowed farm loans from 2008 to April 1, 2012 and the those who sought loans after June 2016 will not get benefit of the scheme,” Sawant said.

He said according to the report sought by the State government from the state-level Banker Committee till March 31, 2016, there were 1.36 lakh farmers having bank accounts, of these 89.75 lakh are in the ambit of the loan facility. But the State government is saying that till March 9, 2017, there were 40 lakh loan defaulting farmers. So, the government is juggling the numbers, he claimed.

“The scheme will benefit only five lakh farmers. The actual farm loan waiver will be to the tune of Rs 5,000 crore only. So, we will raise the issue in the monsoon session of the State Assembly and demand an explanation from the government,” Sawant said.

“Our demand is a complete farm loan waiver, under which all loan defaulter farmers get the benefit,” he added.
