‘No pvt bus operator violated fare norm’

‘No pvt bus operator violated fare norm’

Pune: The Regional Transport Office (RTO), Pune had conducted a surprise check during Diwali, after receiving calls from passengers that some private bus operators are charging more than the actual fare. However, as per the RTO officials, they did not find any violations.

Thousands of passengers travelled to their home towns ahead of Diwali and had to pay whatever the private bus operators charge them.

The RTO officials recently held a meeting with private bus operators association and asked them not to charge more than the directive laid down by the State government, which is 1.5 times more than the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) charge.

“During the meeting, we told the private operators they can’t charge more than 1.5 times the ST charge. We were assured by them, but during the festival, we came to know that some private buses were charging more. We conducted surprise checks with our special squad at various place like Sangamwadi, Shivajinagar, Swargate, Hadapsar, Kothrud, Katraj, Kharadi Bypass and other places. We did not find any violators,” said Sanjay Raut, Deputy RTO Pune.

However, it was observed that several passengers paid more than the actual fare to the travel operators. Sakal Times had reported that several private bus operators are charging double the usual bus fare. The passengers paid Rs 3,500 for sleeper bus to Nagpur which is Rs 1,400 more than the usual State Transport fare. The price for the same destination by the State Transport’s Shivshahi sleeper is Rs 2,100.

During the regular check of private bus after the Diwali festival was over, the RTO found eight buses were violating the rule and they imposed fine of Rs 3,29,575.
